The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2025 WASSCE for School Candidates, as announced by Mr. Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC’s National Office in Nigeria, during a press briefing in Lagos.
Decline in Core Subject Performance
Out of 1,973,365 registered candidates, 1,969,313 sat for the exam across 23,554 secondary schools. While 87.24% (1,718,090 candidates) earned credit and above in at least five subjects (regardless of English and Mathematics), only 38.32% (754,545 candidates) achieved credits in five subjects including both English and Mathematics.
This marks a 33.8% drop compared to the 72.12% success rate recorded in 2024 a concerning decline in performance.
Gender & Special Needs Statistics
- Male Candidates: 976,787 (49.60%)
- Female Candidates: 992,526 (50.40%)
- Special Needs Candidates: 12,178
- Visually impaired: 112
- Hearing impaired: 615
- Mental challenges: 52
- Physically challenged: 37
WAEC confirmed that adequate accommodations were made and all results have been released for these candidates.
Result Status
- Fully Processed & Released: 1,517,517 (77.06%)
- Pending Validation: 451,796 (22.94%)
- Withheld Due to Malpractice Allegations: 192,089 (9.75%)
Issues include phone smuggling and widespread question leaks via social media.
